Minutes: JO PAC meeting February 15, 2011

Meeting Commenced: 7pm, Feb. 15, 2011

    1. Farrell Segall welcomed everyone and called meeting to order.

  5. Mini School Update
    1. The next mini-school field trip is to Strathcona Park Lodge on Vancouver Island, Sunday April 17 – 21. Chaperones are needed.
  6. Principal and Vice Principal’s Report
    1. Mid Year Exam and Special Instruction Week, Jan, 24 – 28 was very successful. Attendance was exceptionally high. Students participated in “experience” exams in order to practice exam skills. Students also attended presentations by a variety of speakers who focused on social responsibility topics. The cost for this week is approximately $8,000. Many other school’s are considering this program.
    2. The John Oliver student newspaper, The Fourth Floor, continues to be supported by funds from the PAC.
    3. Two blocks next year will be saved to focus on literacy initiatives. Teachers will be surveyed to find out which literacy problems need to be addressed. Each student will be tested to ascertain literacy levels. Tools such as ipads will be used to engage students and interest them in reading. The goal is to have 95% of the students reading at their grade level.
    4. John Oliver’s growth goals continue to be academic competence and social responsibility.

    1. Farrell Segall and Jackie Hollis attended a meeting for parents of future J.O. Students.
  8. John Oliver Web Site Parents Workshop
    1. Mr. Su announced that John Oliver will soon have site wide wireless.
    2. Students use the web-site to view teacher’s blogs, the contact us site, the gallery, the bell schedule, clubs information, and google calendar.
    3. Dustin Keller and Jeff Spence have been encouraging teachers to blog.
    4. Dustin and Jeff broke parents into groups and presented workshops on the J.O. Web-site and the teacher blogs.
